We are the Sumter Family of the Columbia, Hopkins, and Gadsden areas of South Carolina. The family represented here is the children of Joseph Sumter, born sometime in the 1860s, according to the South Carolina 1870 census records. We are the Descendants of Joseph (Josie) Sumter and his children. Joseph Sumter, along with Matilda Williams Sumter and Sallie Adams Sumter, had nineteen children, of whom fifteen lived to adulthood.
